5 Steps to get a job in the United Nations

How to Fill in Personal History Form

Personal History Form is also called P-11 form. A good P-11 form with a cover letter is the shortest way for the interview.

Filling out the Personal History Form (PHF) or P11 form for the United Nations or similar organizations is a crucial step in the application process. This document provides a detailed account of your personal details, education, professional experience, languages known, and other relevant skills. It's essential to complete this form thoroughly and accurately, as it's often used to determine your suitability for a position before you even reach the interview stage. Here are step-by-step guidelines to help you effectively complete the Personal History Form:

1. Gather Necessary Information

Before you begin filling out the form, gather all the necessary documents and information. This includes your educational qualifications, full employment history, professional trainings, language skills, and any other relevant skills or experiences such as publications, memberships in professional associations, etc.

2. Complete Personal Information

Fill in your full name, date of birth, nationality, and contact information. Ensure that all details are accurate and up-to-date, as this information will be used for official communications.

3. Detail Your Education

List all educational qualifications starting from your highest degree. Include the name of the institution, the field of study, the dates attended, and the degree or certification obtained. If you have attended multiple institutions, list them in reverse chronological order.

4. Outline Your Professional Experience

Provide a comprehensive list of all your employment history. For each position, include:

  • The name and address of the employer.
  • Your job title.
  • The period of employment (month and year).
  • A brief description of your duties and responsibilities.
  • Key achievements or contributions. Start with your current or most recent job and work backwards. Be concise but informative in your descriptions.

5. Describe Your Language Skills

Indicate your proficiency level (basic, intermediate, fluent, or mother tongue) in each language you speak. Be honest about your skill levels, as you may be tested during the recruitment process.

6. Include Additional Skills

List any computer skills, technical skills, or certifications that are relevant to the job you are applying for. Highlight skills that give you an edge over other candidates, such as proficiency in statistical analysis software, project management certifications, or advanced IT skills.

7. Add References

Provide contact details for professional references. Choose referees who are familiar with your work and can provide relevant insights into your capabilities and work ethic. Typically, you should include at least three references.

8. Review and Attach Supporting Documents

After filling out the form, review all entries to ensure accuracy and completeness. Attach any required or relevant documents that support your application. This could include a cover letter, detailed resumes, copies of your educational certificates, letters of recommendation, or portfolios.

9. Submit the Form

Follow the submission guidelines provided by the organization. This could be through an online system, email, or physical mail. Make sure you adhere to any formatting or submission instructions.

Additional Tips

  • Be Honest: Provide honest and accurate information. Any falsehoods or inaccuracies can lead to disqualification.
  • Be Professional: Use a formal and professional tone throughout the form. Avoid slang or casual language.
  • Keep it Relevant: Tailor the information you include to the job you are applying for. Highlight experiences and skills that are pertinent to the role.
  • Save a Copy: Keep a copy of the filled form for your records and for preparing for potential interviews.
